Time and tide

Trapped 4
watercolor on paper, 22" x 20"
Katharine A. Cartwright, NWS
It takes the tides here in Coastal Maine along with time to create some of the most beautiful and unique settings you can imagine. I never tire of looking into the crevasses between the granite boulders to see what's been trapped. I don't paint exactly what I see. I just observe, then come back to my studio and interpret from my imagination.

Aileen's Cairn
watercolor, 18" x 12"

The tradition of building cairns is as old as human societies. They've served a purpose: markers and guideposts, memorials, signs, sculptures, and so on. Stacking stones has both meaning and physical challenge. In this case, I stacked stones with my imagination and with my paintbrush as a memorial to Aileen.

Looking in Between

Trapped 2
watercolor on Arches paper,
20" x 27"
One thing I love to do is to walk on the huge granite outcrops that make our Maine coastline, and look into the cracks between them to see what was trapped between tides. There are always beautiful and interesting arrangements of pebbles, seaweed, and shells. This is my interpretation of one of those trapped assemblages.

Here in Maine, you'll often find cobbles piled up on the beach. These small stacks are memorials are often created by those who wish to remember or honor someone. Each one has a special meaning.

Rolling Stones
watercolor on paper

I love collecting rounded cobbles from the beaches near our home here in Maine. Their texture and colors are so beautiful. Here are two paintings completed in watercolor where I interpret them.
